Cape Town Travel Guide

Nicknamed “The Mother City,” Cape Town is the perfect blend of interesting city life, delicious food, and wonderful people. It’s a place where you can be adventurous, soak in wonderful views, and indulge in non-stop eating at some of the most incredible restaurants. Whatever you fill your time with, you won’t be disappointed.

Best time to visit

Cape Town’s summer corresponds with winter in the United States. The best time to visit Cape Town is during shoulder season, from March to May and September to November. During this time, the weather will be pleasant, and there won’t be as many crowds (or pricey accommodations) as during the summer months of December through March.

Top regions to visit

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a vibrant hub in the heart of the city’s working harbor, with stunning views of Table Mountain and easy access to Robben Island. The area is packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and cultural landmarks. Talented musicians are dotted around and worth a stop to watch. The waterfront is perfect for taking a stroll along the waterfront and enjoying the views, visiting museums, or sampling local cuisine.

Camps Bay

Known for its beautiful white sand beaches and upscale restaurants, Camps Bay stretches across the western edge of Table Mountain. Packed with beachside restaurants, cafes, and bars overlooking the blue waters, this upscale neighborhood is perfect for those seeking scenic views, sunsets, or simply strolling on a vibrant and lively promenade.

Constantia Valley

Located just a short drive from central Cape Town, Constantia Valley is a must-visit for wine lovers. The valley is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the Southern Hemisphere, and is known for its lush vineyards and unique tastings. In addition to the delicious wine, visitors will also be greeted with picturesque landscapes of rolling vineyards, gardens, and manxions. There’s also some excellent hiking in the area for those wishing to explore more of the natural beauty of the area.

Bo-Kaap

This vibrant and historic hillside neighborhood is known for its cobblestone streets and brightly colored houses. Sitting close to the heart of the city on the slopes of Signal Hill—one of the city’s most recognizable monuments—Bo-Kaap was home to the Cape Malay community for generations. Today, visitors can explore the Bo-Kaap Museum to learn about the area’s origins.

Top activities in Cape Town

Table Mountain

The views from the top of Table Mountain are iconic and phenomenal, and once you reach the top, there are some wonderful walks that allow you to explore further. Some people choose to hike up, while others opt for a cable car. Regardless of how you get there, once you reach the top, the mountain will stun you with its breathtaking panoramic views of the city, coastline, and surrounding mountains.

Bri’s Insider Tip:

Start trying to go up the mountain from the second you arrive. As it is weather dependent, 70% of those who visit Cape Town will not go up the mountain. It's also really helpful to buy your tickets online ahead of time so you don’t have to queue in line for that as well once you arrive.

Cape Point Nature Reserve

Cape Point Nature Reserve is part of the larger Table Mountain National Park on the Cape of Good Hope peninsula. Located at the southwestern tip of Africa, Cape Point offers panoramic views of where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, rugged cliffs, and dramatic seascapes. The reserve is also home to wildlife like antelope, baboons, and birds. There are plenty of scenic hiking trails for visitors to explore the area, beautiful beaches and coves, and a historic lighthouse.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world and are located at the foot of Table Mountain. At over 1,300 acres, the gardens feature a wide range of diverse plants, including endangered floral species. Wander the themed gardens or explore the tree canopy walkway for views from higher up. You’ll also find outdoor concerts and art exhibits here.

Penguin spotting at Boulders Beach

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to Boulders Beach in Cape Town to view the local African penguin colony. Boulders and the surrounding beaches are now a protected marine area in an effort to safeguard the penguins that live there. There are also boardwalks that wind their way through the dunes from which you can view the birds—these boardwalks also serve to protect the penguins and their chicks. The penguins can also be found in the water, allowing visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim with penguins.

Food tour through the historical Bo-Kaap neighborhood

The food in Bo-Kaap is a source of pride for many families. Cape Malay cuisine is known for its combination of sweet and spicy, with culinary traditions stemming from Indonesia and Malaysia mixed together with African flavors. A food tour through the neighborhood is the best way to taste every unique dish the area has to offer.

Robbens Island

Robben Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and known for its historical significance. The island, located off the coast of Cape Town, served as a maximum-security prison during the apartheid era, where Nelson Mandela was famously incarcerated for 18 of his 27 years in prison. Today, guided tours led by former political prisoners provide an insightful look into the island's past, including a visit to Mandela's cell and the limestone quarry where prisoners were forced to work. The tours also highlight the island's natural beauty and its rich biodiversity, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
