Last Minute Memorial Weekend Ideas in California

Am I the only one who feels like they blinked, and all the sudden it's May?! If that is you as well you might not have even thought to plan something for the upcoming holiday weekend at the end of the month. First and foremost, Memorial Day in the U.S. is a time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. For many of us, we also consider it to be the unofficial kickoff of summer, and many people like to get away and enjoy some fun in the sun.

While it’s probably too late to plan a proper vacation for Memorial Day, you still can make the most of the holiday weekend and maximize your time with friends and family.  If you are local to California, here are a few ideas that you can easily pull together for a Memorial Day weekend celebration.

Palm Springs

Lest you think that Palm Springs is a sleepy place where people go to retire, or just a pit stop on the way to Coachella, this little desert gem has turned into the premiere place to have an epic getaway. Palm Springs is perfect for a long weekend, and there doesn’t need to be much on the agenda besides pool time and a good book or two.  Head to the desert for a comfortable stay in a gorgeous boutique hotel, enjoy some quality meals, and soak up that Vitamin D.

Ojai

Just north of Malibu, this popular weekend getaway is known for its gorgeous Spanish architecture, winding hiking paths, and locally sourced cuisine. It’s a perfect place to relax, and if farm-to-table is your jam, you are in luck – corporate chains are actually banned here! Activities here can include relaxing by the pool, indulging in a massage or two, taking a dip in the hot springs, or finding your namaste at a local yoga spot.

Mammoth

Instead of heading to the beach, why not go up to the mountains? Many people think of Mammoth as an incredible winter destination (which it is), but it's equally beautiful during every season.  After the snow melts, the flowers bloom, and the bears come out of hibernation, Mammoth is a great destination if you like to hike, go out on a boat, or just be in nature.

Catalina Island

If you are looking for a little island life without flying all the way to the Caribbean or the French Riviera, Catalina island is the perfect solution. Just an hour from Long Beach by ferry, you arrive in the small town of Avalon that is built into the hills around a palm tree-lined seafront that overlooks a sleepy harbor.  Spend some time at Descanso beach club, go on a ziplining adventure, head out for some incredible snorkeling, or just tool around town on a golf cart – the preferred method of transportation around the island.

And if this sounds entirely too last minute for you, or you can’t find availability that works then save this post and plan one of these trips some time in the near future! The great thing about California is that we have so amazing getaway destinations to choose from, virtually year round!
