Just Back From… Portugal

Portugal has always held a special place in my heart, but this recent trip deepened my love for this incredible country. From the vibrant streets of Lisbon to the tranquil beauty of the Douro Valley, Portugal is a destination that offers something for everyone. Whether you're a foodie, a history buff, or simply in need of some relaxation, Portugal's charm is undeniable. Here is a peek into our family trip there this summer. We spent an entire month in Portugal, and had the time of our lives!

A Journey Through Lisbon: Where History Meets Modernity
Our adventure began in Lisbon, a city where every corner tells a story. Walking through the Alfama district, with its narrow, winding streets and colorful tiles, we felt like we were stepping back in time. The highlight of our time in Lisbon was a private sidecar tour through the city, something I’ve loved to include in clients itineraries and couldn’t wait to experience for myself. We glided through the city's historic neighborhoods, with the heartbeat of Lisbon whizzing past.

We also found ourselves captivated by Lisbon's vibrant dining scene. There are so many good restaurants here, and thanks to the phenomenal kids club option at Martinhal Chiado where we were staying, my husband and I had the opportunity to really experience a few that were on my list without the chaos of dining with toddlers. The energy of the city, combined with these unique experiences, made Lisbon a place we didn’t want to leave.

Finding Peace in Portugal’s North
While Lisbon dazzled with its vibrant energy, the north of Portugal offered a different kind of beauty—one that was calm, peaceful, and bit more serene. My solo journey to Porto was a time of quiet reflection. The city’s historic center, with its iconic bridges and charming streets, was the perfect place to unwind. Porto’s rich culture and the gentle flow of the Douro River made it easy to lose track of time.

But the true highlight of my northern adventure was the Douro Valley. Staying in a charming vineyard estate, I found myself surrounded by rolling hills, endless vineyards, and a tranquility that was hard to leave behind. Each morning, I woke up to breathtaking views, and each evening, I watched the sun set over the valley, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange. This part of Portugal is a peaceful haven, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, as well as those like myself who have an affinity for delicious wine!

Exploring Portugal’s Coastal Gems
After my time up north, I ventured south to the Algarve where my family was already settled in, and where golden beaches and dramatic cliffs awaited me. The Algarve is a beach lover's paradise, and we spent our days exploring the stunning beaches of the region, and all the different towns. This was the part of our experience where not much was planned, but one of the most magical experiences we did do was a boat tour to the Ponta de Piedade, where the interplay of light and shadow created an otherworldly atmosphere. It felt like we had discovered a hidden treasure.

The Grand Finale: São Lourenço do Barrocal
Our journey ended at São Lourenço do Barrocal, a luxurious countryside retreat that felt like a world unto itself. Nestled in the Alentejo region, this estate offered a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. Here, we slowed down, savoring the beauty of nature and the simplicity of life. We spent our days exploring the vast estate, biking through the olive groves, and enjoying the farm-to-table cuisine that showcased the flavors of the region.

One of the most memorable moments was an afternoon spent by the pool, surrounded by the tranquility of the countryside. It was the perfect way to end our trip, allowing us to soak in the beauty of Portugal one last time before heading home.

Why Portugal Should Be Your Next Destination
Portugal is a country that captivates all who visit, and my recent trip only reinforced my belief that this is a must-visit destination. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a cultural experience, Portugal has it all. The warmth of its people, the beauty of its landscapes, and the richness of its history make it a place you'll want to return to time and time again.
